FITNESS & READINESS

Know what a trip actually asks of you before you book.

This is general fitness guidance, based on common practice across Himalayan trekking operators — not a medical assessment. If you have a pre-existing heart, lung, or blood pressure condition, please consult a doctor before booking a Moderate or Challenging trip, and tell your trip leader in advance.

DIFFICULTY RATINGS

How our difficulty ratings work

Ratings reflect terrain, daily trekking time, altitude, and the prior experience they generally call for — the same broad factors most trek operators use to grade a trip.

Charkadam rating What it generally means
Easy-Moderate Gentle trails, up to 4–5 hours of walking on some days. No high-altitude exposure. Good for first-time trekkers with a basic fitness level.
Easy (sightseeing & cultural circuit) Mostly on-foot sightseeing and short walks, under 2–3 hours of walking on any day. No trekking experience needed.
Easy-Moderate (root-bridge trek) Similar to Easy-Moderate, with some stretches of stairs, slopes, and river crossings. A reasonable base fitness level helps.
Moderate Longer trekking days, up to 6 hours, may involve altitude above roughly 3,000–4,000m or uneven terrain. A basic fitness routine beforehand is recommended.
Challenging (high-altitude winter) The most demanding of our trips — high altitude (potentially 4,000m+), cold-weather conditions, multi-day trekking. Dedicated cardio and altitude prep in the weeks before departure is strongly recommended.

GENERAL GUIDANCE

Getting ready

A general benchmark, not a pass/fail test Charkadam administers — use it as a starting point and adjust for your own fitness.

  • Easy / Easy-Moderate trips

A few weeks of being generally active — regular walking, light exercise — is usually enough.

  • Moderate trips

4–6 weeks of building up brisk walking, light jogging, and stair climbing helps.

  • Challenging (high-altitude winter) trips

8+ weeks of dedicated cardio prep — building toward a comfortable 4–5km jog or brisk walk — plus a few weeks of stair-climbing with a loaded daypack is a commonly recommended benchmark across Himalayan trek operators.

SIMPLE SELF-CHECK

A quick honest check, not a scored quiz

  • Can you comfortably climb 4–5 flights of stairs without significant breathlessness?

  • Have you walked or hiked for 3+ hours in a single day before?

  • Are you generally active — walking, light exercise, sport — at least a couple of times a week?

  • For Moderate or Challenging trips: have you spent time at altitude before, or do you know how you tend to respond to it?
